A Piece for the Roma Community
Sept 2021
Alexander Manuiloff, together with Galina Ryom-Røjbek, Martin Penev and Ivan Shopov took part in the creation of a contemporary circus theatre performance called Stories from the Wheel.
Stories from the Wheel is a performance that tells the story of a Roma orphan who, after being adopted, ends up winning the Unicycle World Cup. It mixes myths and Bible tales into a theatrical fairy tale of growth and opression, seeking own origins and a truth for our identity. It speaks of terrible instances of violent racism and beautiful moments of acceptance and healing. A performance for all those children who were once abandoned and whose fate developed in a different way.
Stories from the Wheel involves young people through workshops in the process of creating both music and circus choreography.
Stories from the Wheel was realized with the support of the Socially Engaged Art 2020 programme of the National Culture Fund and was shown for free for kids in the Roma Talents – 2016 Community Centre and 75 Todor Kableshkov Primary School, Fakulteta district, Sofia.
